Shell Lake

Shell Lake is located in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and west of the Port Oneida and Pyramid Point area. It is one of the only lakes in the Park entirely enclosed by wilderness. As the largest of the Park's wilderness lakes, Shell Lake is home to a variety of wildlife including herons, beavers, and an abundance of fish. The only way to access the lake with a vehicle is from county-owned Elliott Road on the east side of the lake. Exercise caution, as the road is prone to flooding, but the ultimate destination is a sandy beach perfect for swimming or launching kayaks and canoes. The old road to the west has been is open to foot travel. Motorized boats are not allowed and there are no restroom facilities.
