South Manitou Island is located in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Manitou Passage of Lake Michigan. There is a visitor center and museum, a lighthouse which visitors can climb to the top of, hiking to unique sand dune formations and old growth cedar forests or along the beach around the island, rustic campling, ghost towns, and the old US Coast Guard Station outbuildings, vehicle tours to view the giant cedar trees and the Francisco Morazan shipwreck or through the farm homesteads. Transportation to the Island is available from Leland, Michigan by the Manitou Transit Company.
